Smoky Quartz is a beautiful chocolatey brown, to coffee brown, to a pale tan variety of the mineral Quartz.  Very popular in the market for it's rich brown colors and also relatively affordable.  Smoky Quartz gets its color from natural radiation within the Earth's crust during formation.  The mineral hardness for this gem is a 7, making it durable enough for all kinds of jewelry.  A very dark almost black variety of Smoky Quartz is known as "Morion."  Sometimes Smoky Quartz can have inclusions of small needle-like crystals called "rutile," making even more of a unique gemstone for collectors.
