Gemstone Cuts:

Cuts below are generally known in the market by both collectors, dealer,s and the general public.  Although when it comes to both dealers and collectors, there are a wider array of cuts from custom faceted designs, to unique carvings.

Princess Cut v.s. Square Cut

For the Princess Cut gemstone, on the table (top) there are facets that are tapered on each corner.  Creating more of a tapered crown, unlike the square cut.

The Square Cut has a square table (top) with a squared crown.  This style of cut is also known as a "Step Cut."

Cabochons are the type of cut for the lesser grade gemstones, star gemstones, and cat's eye gemstones. Stones are cut this way because it helps achieve their maximum beauty.  There are different types of cabochons, such as high domed, medium domed, low domed, free-formed (meaning no true shape), and faceted (typically rose cut).
