Carnelian is a type of Agate that is colored by iron oxide.  Common in the gem market, Carnelian is known for its rusty orange colors.  It has been known since the ancient Romans, as it was used in jewelry depicted with cameos.  In ancient times, it was also thought that Carnelian was used to help ease its wearer from anger.  Today it is crafted into carvings, beads, cabochons, and display specimens.  Having the mineral hardness of 6 1/2, it is used in all forms of jewelry.
