Gemstone Details:

Jet is essentially petrified coal.  The term "jet black" is a direct reference to this organic gemstone.  Formed usually in swampy to marsh environments, it is also formed from decaying lifeforms over a million years ago. In rough forms, it has the dull black velvety appearance, but once cut and polished, it shines the darkest of black with a mirror finish.  During the Victoria Age, it was used in Mourning Jewelry.  It is still used today in carvings, beads, and sometimes cut for collectors (usually cut en cabochon).  It is almost composed entirely of carbon.
